Monte-Carlo Masters: Carlos Alcaraz sets up blockbuster final against Jannik Sinner in battle for world No 1 spot

Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz both cruised into the Monte-Carlo Masters final, where they will meet for their first showdown of 2026.

Sinner converted all four break points across an 82-minute encounter as he overwhelmed Alexander Zverev 6-1 6-4 on Court Rainier III before Alcaraz beat Valentin Vacherot 6-4 6-4.

That sets up a blockbuster final on Sunday afternoon, live on Your Site Tennis, with the winner also set to be crowned World No 1 on Monday.

Sinner is now on a 21-match winning streak at Masters 1000 level following his title runs in Paris last November and Indian Wells and Miami last month.

"I'm very happy. We came here trying to give myself some feedback [on clay] and now finding myself in the final means a lot to me," said Sinner.

"Obviously every match, every day is different, so I'm very happy about today's performance. I felt really solid from the beginning. When you are a break up straightaway, it changes the dynamic of the match, so very happy and let's see what's coming in the final."

Jamie Murray, speaking to Your Site Tennis:

"It was a flawless performance. It was so good, complete domination from Sinner. He had Zverev on the ropes from first ball to last, especially on the forehand wing. Winners galore flying off his racket. It was a statement performance and he will be looking forward to the final.

"Sinner was the aggressor, the one dictating play. He was able to play on his terms and Zverev didn't have an answer."

Defending champion and top seed Alcaraz ended Vacherot's fairytale run in the other semi-final.

The Monegasque player had knocked out Lorenzo Musetti, Hubert Hurkacz and Alex de Minaur on his way to the Monte Carlo semi-finals.

However, Alcaraz struck first in the opening set, breaking serve to ‌move 2-1 ahead before sealing the set with an ace.

Just as the seven-time Grand Slam champion appeared to be cruising, Vacherot mounted a spirited fightback and edged ahead 4-3 in the second set.

However, Alcaraz proved too strong, winning three successive games to seal victory and confirm his first meeting with Sinner this year.

"I think it's the dream spot for everyone," Alcaraz said.

"I'm fighting for my second Monte Carlo title; ‌Jannik's fighting for his first one. It's going to be a really special one.

"The world No 1 is on the line. That makes tomorrow even more special.

"I'm just really happy to win this really difficult match against Valentin. ‌He's playing great tennis with a lot of confidence right now.

"Playing in his hometown, it was really tough to deal with.

"For me, I'm really excited about my first meeting with Jannik this year, first final. Let's see how it's going to be tomorrow. I'm excited about it."

Sinner becomes just the fourth man to reach the final at the first three Masters 1000s in a season [after Roger Federer in 2006, Rafael Nadal in 2011 and Novak Djokovic in 2015].

While with with his win, Alcaraz became only the third player to reach 10 ATP 1000 finals before the age of 23, joining Rafa Nadal and Novak Djokovic since the format began in 1990.

Rory McIlroy planned to keep his mind off golf as much as possible while awaiting the third round of the Masters.

"There's actually two really good semi-finals at Monte Carlo in the tennis. So I'll watch that," he said. "We've been watching the tennis early in the mornings."

The Northern Irishman ‌ to leave a leaderboard packed with major title winners looking up at the defending champion as the tournament reached the halfway point.

McIlroy is 12-under ‌par with one further adrift.
